Two weeks ago we packed up the truck and headed to Alamo Lake State Park in Wenden, AZ. We had never been before, and we were so excited to check it out. Last spring we had a cabin at Roper Lake and it was so much fun, the new cabins the state park offers, make it so easy to get away for the weekend.

We headed out late on Thursday afternoon, with hubby planning to join us Friday after work. As you all know, plans with kids never go as intended, we left about 2 hours later than we had originally thought. I have to say the drive out was one of the best parts of this crazy adventure. We turned off I10 and headed East, it was pitch black and there were no other cars. We kept seeing signs saying it was open range and to watch for cattle, it should have said "and wild burros". The kids loved that we had to drive so slow to watch for livestock, and they became my "donkey watchers" so I could drive. It took us quite some time to get there as I was a bit concerned about hitting something in the dark, yes a daytime drive would have been much easier, but way less exciting!!

It was so worth the chaos though, we arrived and unloaded into our cabin and got settled into the comfy bunks for the night. The cabins at Alamo Lake are new, and the front porches were my favorite part. First thing in the morning I set my chair up on the porch, it was the perfect spot to drink my morning coffee and watch the kids play. I also really enjoyed the fact that our cabin was right beside the washroom facilities, the real flush kind that had showers. My kids still whine and complain about outhouses, although they are getting better.

We went for a little drive up the road to try to get signal on my phone, I needed to tell hubby what cabin we were in, and warn him of the animals on the road in case he didn't drive up till dark. Within minutes we had seen some beautiful deer, bunnies, and more burros..the kids were in heaven.

We came back to the cabin and set about making breakfast, there are no cooking facilities in the cabins, but I love to cook outdoors so it's a win win for me. The birds were chirping and it was so peaceful. The kids rode their bikes while I made breakfast, it was so nice not to have to worry about them. After we ate we headed down to the lake, they love to swim. They splashed around in the water and had a great time. There were loads of people putting boats in, the lake is well known for it's fishing, it even has a great fish cleaning station.

While we were at the lake the kids decided to tidy up the beach, they got awesome posters from the Park Ranger for doing so. The park has a great Junior Ranger program, the kids were thrilled. They got goody bags with coloring pages, and stickers as well as some booklets. If you haven't checked out Alamo Lake, you really need to, the drive is so fun, and the park is amazing. If you don't like to tent camp, the cabins are perfect!
