United Food Bank’s Presents Family Action Month Initiative

Local Food Bank Raises Awareness and Provides Education to Hunger in Arizona

PHOENIX – September is known as Hunger Action Month, a nation-wide campaign by Feeding America designed to raise awareness about hunger in our local communities. United Food Bank, a Feeding America member food bank, is challenging Arizona families to make this September a month for learning and taking action.

United Food Bank expands on the Hunger Action Month campaign with its Family Action Month initiative. With three main components, education, advocate and volunteer, families can learn about the impact of hunger in the Arizona community, stand up for those in need and take action together.

Every September, United Food Bank invites Arizona families to educate themselves on hunger and food insecurity. Families who register for this movement can access Maddi’s Fridge, a children’s picture book that raises awareness about poverty and hunger. Additionally, families receive an activity packet with a guide on how to talk about the issue of hunger and ways to address it, as well as a map showing where food insecurity exists in different counties.

The Family Action Month movement encourages families to become advocates in their community by hosting a food drive, donating food to local food banks and using their voice on social media to share anti-hunger initiatives. Families can also participate by volunteering at United Food Bank and help pack emergency food bags.

The Hunger Action Month volunteer day will be held on Sept. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. and is open to all ages. United Food Bank hosts regular volunteer sessions year-round and is looking for volunteers to help provide 300,000 pounds of food per week to families in need.

“In Arizona, nearly one million people suffer from food insecurity and unfortunately, that number continues to grow across the state,” said Jason Reed, CEO of United Food Bank. “We are excited to once again host Family Action Month in hopes of raising awareness and providing education to food insecurity and hunger in our communities. We hope Arizona families will join the movement to end hunger today.”
